THE GOALKEEPER of JG Zuma High School’s football team, Mlamuli Sibiya, strongly believes they have the quality to win this year’s Under-15 Copa Coca-Cola National Tournament in Bloemfontein next month.
The high school from Inanda will represent KwaZulu-Natal at the national championships after paving their way with a 3-2 penalties victory over Edendale Technical School following a 1-1 stalemate.
Sibiya said: “I knew we had won it the moment they missed their penalty kick after we had scored. Now we can concentrate on preparing for the nationals, which we plan to win.”
Victorious coach Caba Mathaba, a geography teacher, looked worn-out by the long wait but still managed to muster some excitement: “The worrying thing is that I don’t have enough on the bench. I only have 12 players and don’t know whether I will be allowed to add more for the nationals.
“If they allow it, we should able to compete and even win the tournament.”
A total of 12 schools participated in the one-day provincial tournament held at the Cator Manor Grounds in Durban.
Tournament ambassador, Simba Marumo, was in awe after watching the matches: “If it was all up to me, I would have taken four schools from KZN. The boys were impressive.”
