KAIZER Chiefs are starting to click and that is bad news for visitors Ajax Cape Town, who face the Absa Premiership leaders at FNB Stadium on Saturday (6pm).
Amakhosi, after a slow start, have turned the corner and are in a “good space”, according to star defender Lorenzo Gordinho.
Said Gordinho: “We’re in a good patch of form at present and aim to keep that winning momentum going against Ajax.”
Chiefs are unbeaten in their last three league matches and head the table with 10 points from five rounds of fixtures.
They also added the Macufe Cup to their trophy cabinet after hammering Bloemfontein Celtic 4-1 at a packed Free State Stadium on Sunday.
Said Gordinho: “We are starting to click as a team. We are now in the right frame of mind. Everyone is fighting for each other and for places in the starting line-up. It all makes for a happy bunch of players.”
Gordinho said the Macufe Cup came at the right time, in the middle of another Fifa international break: “The stop-start season is not helping clubs keep their rhythm and momentum. So the Macufe Cup was great for us.
“Although it is a friendly it was very competitive. It was played at a packed stadium and the win did our confidence a power of good ahead of the Ajax game.”
The 22-year-old Benoni-born defender is one of the rising stars in Mzansi and has become a rock at the heart of the Chiefs defence this season.
He has added a powerful string to his bow in the form of his ability to score goals from set pieces. He has netted twice in the five league matches.
Said Gordinho: “The coach (Steve Komphela) gave me a target of five goals and it’s looking good. I can achieve that target.”
Gordinho said Komphela had helped motivate his game: “Coach Steve is getting his message across to the players and got us fighting for success.
“We all understand what he wants from us. We had a rocky start because of the pressure we put on ourselves. That’s all changed. The reason things are starting to look good is because we have taken that pressure off our shoulders and go out to enjoy the game without any pressure.”
But he and his teammates are fired up for Ajax: “We have a history with Ajax. Teams like Ajax come to Chiefs with their A-game.
“So we have to bring our A-plus game. It will be hard, physical and like a cup final.
“We will be ready for them.”
