MAMELODI Sundowns, who will be representing Africa at the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan, will be boosted by the message of support they got from Zamalek, the team they defeated to win the Caf Champions League.
Zamalek showed good sportsmanship when they wrote on their Twitter account that Sundowns must represent the African continent well.
“Best of luck to Mamelodi Sundowns FC at the Fifa Club World Cup, make Africa proud!” Zamalek tweeted this week.
Sundowns faced Zamalek on two occasions in the Champions League – in the final and in the group stages. Both matches had two legs and Sundowns came out tops.
On Tuesday, Sundowns were in transit in Hong Kong, China, before catching their connecting flight to Osaka, Japan, yesterday.
Upon their arrival in Japan, the African champs were officially welcomed by a Fifa delegation. Skipper Hlompho Kekana and his troops were presented with a Fifa Participation Plaque by Fifa general co-ordinator Luis Castro at the welcoming ceremony.
After resting, Masandawana had their first training session at the Kincho Stadium to begin acclimatising, working on their strategies for their first match.
If Sundowns get past their first opponents, the winners of the match between Kashima Antlers and Auckland City, they will take on Copa Libertadores winners, Columbian side Atletico Nacional.
The winner of that match – which will take place on 14 December – goes through to the final to be played on 18 December.
