GOGO ERNESTINA and her daughter Patricia woke up to a strange sight in their yard.

But the two women, though alone in the house, were not scared of the half-naked man.

THE GOGO KNEW SHE HAD THE VIRGIN MARY ON HER SIDE.

Gogo Ernestina Machaka from Orlando East, Soweto told the SunTeam her statues of Virgin Mary trapped the man in her yard.

“I’ve had these statues for as long as I can remember and they protect my home,” she said.

Gogo said the statues stopped the naked man who had entered her yard dead in his tracks. The gogo said she was asleep when her daughter Patricia Lekoma (46) got up at 3.30am yesterday to get ready for work.

Then Patricia heard someone walking outside their house in Orlando East, Soweto.

She looked out the window and saw the man.

She told Daily Sun she cursed him and he stopped in his tracks.

“He just froze,” said Patricia.

She woke up the neighbours, who all agreed the man was strange. They wanted to know how he ended up in the heavily fenced yard if he was not up to something.

Some said the man should be beaten up and set alight but gogo Ernestina said that she didn’t want blood on her hands.

She called the cops, who arrived and rescued the man.

Gogo Ernestina said if it wasn’t for the statues, which she got at a Catholic church a long time ago, the man could have done whatever he wanted to do.

“But the statues caught him and he was exposed,” said the gogo.

She said when a nyaope boy broke into her house some time ago, she and her daughter prayed while holding the figures.

“Soon we were called by neighbours who told us a boy was found carrying a bucket with stolen things in it.

“We went to check and found our things in the bucket,” she said. Ernestina believes in God and prayer.

“I don’t worship the statues but they help me a lot and I am safe with them.”

No case was opened when the police took the man because he had not stolen anything.

Sangoma Jabulani Mthimunye said: “The family needs to consult a powerful sangoma to strengthen their yard.”
