“PEOPLE are dying because of drivers who are not fit to be on the road!”
This was what Simon Zwane, the Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman, said after a raid during which men accused of producing fake licences were bust.
Police, the national traffic anti-corruption unit and the Gauteng traffic police compliance unit conducted the raid at an internet cafe in the Joburg CBD yesterday. Police had received a tip-off that fake licences were being produced, and they confiscated computers, printers, stamps and fake bank statements.
Zwane said three suspects were detained for questioning and will be charged with fraud. He said the raid came just a few days after police raided a bogus doctor’s office in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. The doctor was allegedly providing fraudulent medical certificates for public transport drivers.
Speaking to the People’s Paper, Zwane said: “We will be doing more raids in the coming weeks.
“We want to remove people with fraudulent documents from the roads and we’re hoping that the more we remove in operations like this, the safer the roads will become.
“We are concerned about the high number of people dying on the roads. We are particularly concerned because drivers who are not fit to be on the road are obtaining documents fraudulently. There are many accidents because of unroadworthy vehicles and we will ensure our roads become safer.”
