MOST people think the taxi industry is only for men, but Thandi Bjang is proving them wrong!
The 35-year-old from Mafefe Village outside Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, told Daily Sun she didn’t let her gender stop her.
Thandi, who calls her Quantum her little angel, said she joined the taxi industry in 2010 and everyone, including the marshals, appreciates her hard work and how she handles passengers.
She said seven years in the
industry have taught her there’s nothing special about men and being a woman taxi driver isn’t a miracle.
Thandi, who drives the route between Polokwane and Mafefe, said at first passengers didn’t trust her but soon all of them wanted to drive with her.
She said as a child she dreamt of becoming a nurse but she didn’t finish high school.
The mum of four said the money she made from driving allows her to take care of her family.
“At first, people used to mock me because I was the only woman in our association but that never discouraged me.
“I love my Quantum and learning the industry lingo keeps me very entertained.”
Taxi owner Lesegisha Kgasago said he was very proud of her work.
“We need to bring more women into the industry.”
He said at first, people asked why he hired a woman but they soon changed their story.
“Today, I receive calls from people telling me about the great work Thandi is doing, making me proud,” he said.
