EVERYONE knows that you mess with Sister Mamokete Moleme at your own risk.

The 3rd Dan Black Belt karateka from Klerksdorp is a nurse by profession.

She is a sister in the ICU unit of Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp, North West.

The 38-year-old mother of two boys aged 7 and 18 said she fell in love with karate 23 years ago when she witnessed a woman protecting herself against a group of boys who were attacking her at a taxi rank.

“She managed to fight them all. I thought to myself, wow this is what I want for myself,” she recalls.

That was in 1993 and ever since, Mamokete has never looked back.

She has participated in tournaments all around the country.

She recently won a trophy at the Thokoza Auditorium in Ekurhuleni, where she had been fighting.

She has also ventured to other countries as far as Ukraine and Australia.

At the moment, Mamokete has an invitation to participate in an international karate tournament in Australia on 20 and 21 August.

She is appealing for donations so that she can raise the R30 000 needed for her plane ticket, visa, accommodation and food.

To her the sport is not only about being able to protect yourself as a woman but to keep fit, disciplined and healthy.

That is why, she said, she made it her business to encourage people to exercise.

“It will unravel your talent,” she said.

“I hope to teach women that one can still have a job and exercise,” she added.
