RESIDENTS of Newtown in Tongaat, north of Durban, said their community hall is now home to local thugs.

They told Daily Sun they don’t have a place to hold functions anymore.

They said something had to be done about the dilapidated hall because they no longer feel safe.

Vusi Khwela, a resident, said: “Every time I walk past the Newtown Community Hall, it feels like someone is watching my every movement. I can’t even send my grandkids to the shops anymore.”

Another resident said corpses were found inside the damaged hall . . .

He said they’d also heard of incidents of women being dragged into the hall and raped!

“We used to book this hall without any hassles because we knew it was ours to use as residents,” she said.

“But ever since it was damaged, we’re left with no choice but to hire tents. We don’t like doing this, but we don’t have an option.”

The disappointed residents said the hall had been in a terrible state of disuse for about a year now.

They never received any explanation from their ward councillor on why the hall was not maintained!

“She’s not saying anything about the condition of the hall, despite the fact that we’ve reported the matter to her,” said another
concerned resident.

They said the councillor should intervene because they were not happy.

Councillor Dolly Munien told Daily Sun she was working to restore the hall to its former glory.

“Renovations are set to take place at the beginning of next month,” she said.

“And by the beginning of December, the hall will be in a good condition.”
