THE IFP missed its chance to participate in local government election in Umzumbe five years ago.
Now it is asking for support in next month’s local government elections.
Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi visited the village of Madonela on Wednesday afternoon to canvass for votes. “We suffered a terrible setback in 2011 when an administrative error caused a late submission of documents to the IEC. We even hired a helicopter to fly them in, but it was grounded by bad weather. In the end we missed the deadline and we were disqualified from contesting in the area,” he said.
“The NFP has suffered an unthinkable setback, just as the IFP in 2011. This is a painful situation for the NFP. Its supporters face the difficult choice of forfeiting their vote or voting for another party.”
He said the ruling party was torn apart by camps and anger over candidate lists.
Prior to the rally, Buthelezi handed over a three-roomed house built by his party members to Zanele Jaca, who said the house was her most precious gift in her whole life.
