AFTER no one pitched up for an event Philile Mncwango was paid to cook for, she had to donate the food to an orphanage.
Making matters worse, her client only paid R7 296 after she quoted him R12 000.
He also demanded R5 000 back, and it later emerged his payment to her had not gone through!
The 40-year-old from Bucc-leuch near Alexandra, Joburg said she was excited when a friend phoned her to tell her about the catering job, and she never expected to be scammed.
She told Daily Sun the man who hired her said he was hosting an event at Joburg City Hall and needed her to cater for 80 people. However, when she arrived at the hall on Sunday there was nobody.
“I asked cops and security guards in the area about the event but they knew nothing about it. That was when I realised I had fallen victim to crooks,” said Philile.
“I communicated with the client directly and he told me to send my banking details. In no time I got an SMS to say I had been paid. However, I later got a message saying the transfer had not been made because of insufficient funds.”
The SunTeam spoke to Philile’s friend, Phangie Dlamini. She said she didn’t know the client personally and had only received an SMS from him. When Daily Sun tried to call his number, the phone went unanswered and was later turned off.
A case of fraud was opened at the Sandton Police Station.
