Nathan Kokari (23) tried to stop a fight in the street.

NATHAN Kokari (23) had no idea that trying to stop a fight would lead to his death.

Witnesses claim a bad joke is what started the fight between Nathan’s friend and two men in Heidedal, Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Clemin Mienes (26), Nathan’s friend, said: “My friend died right in front of me.

“We were drinking at a tavern after Nathan’s cousin’s funeral.

“His friend came over and they went outside to talk while I stayed inside.

“Suddenly, I heard a bottle breaking and when I went out to investigate, his friend was arguing with two men.

“When Nathan told his friend to cool down, the friend turned against him and ran away.

“I thought the fight was over but minutes later he came back armed with a knife.

“Before Nathan could say a word, he was stabbed in the heart.

“The friend ran to the police station and handed himself over to the cops.

“I still don’t know what led Nathan’s friend to stab him. All he did was try to stop him from fighting with two men who were clearly going to hurt him.

“Nathan’s death will haunt the friend forever.”

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said: “We are investigating a case of murder. A 23-year-old man was arrested.”
