THE angry gogo said she wants her grandson to be taken away from his mother and to come and live with her.
Esther Tsaidume (52) told Daily Sun she believes her grandson’s mother is neglecting the baby and spends most of her time smoking
nyaope.
She said she wants the one-year-old boy to live with her so she can take care of him.
But Bongi Thabethe (26), the baby’s mum, said the accusations are nonsense.
Esther, so angry that she was shaking, said she has been looking after the baby for months.
“Bongi has taken him back. But she doesn’t have an ID or the baby’s birth certificate and she never takes him to the clinic,” Esther said.
The gogo and the mum live in separate houses in Snake Park, Soweto. When the SunTeam went with the gogo to talk to the mum, a big fight broke out.
Shaun, the gogo’s son and the father of the baby, also joined in to throw insults.
Bongi said the gogo and her son don’t want the baby, only his grant money.
“I didn’t fetch the child. Shaun brought him here and dumped him with me on Thursday.
“He said his mum can’t look after a baby who doesn’t have papers. They don’t really care about the child,” Bongi said.
She admitted she had a nyaope problem, but said she did not neglect her baby.
Esther said she was not interested in a small amount of grant money but wanted the child to grow up in a decent environment.
She said all her other grandkids had proper documents and she looked after them properly.
The Gauteng department of social development has promised to intervene and help Bongi and her baby.
