The man behind Mugwanti Wa Pitori is back with a bang!
In 2005, the track made waves all over the country when it became an instant hit and Pretoria’s fast-beat music was labelled mugwanti.
Mugwanti GP, whose real name is Thami Mpande, was born in Atteridgeville and started singing at a very young age.
GP told SunBuzz: “I have always been creative with lots of enthusiasm, just like the music pioneer Beethoven.
“ I have come up with a new sound that makes up a whole new genre called Bacardi, sung in a new vocabulary made up by Pretorians.
“This sound represents Mzansi’s creative music, made up of hard-kick bass drums, raw snares and rhythms that get audiences to dance.”
In 2006, GP released his debut album Mugwanti Wa Pitori, which became very popular.
In 2008, he released Mugwanti Wa Pitori Volume 2, which also became a hit and saw him touring the country, performing with top artists like Hugh Masikela and Mafikizolo.
In 2011, the song Mugwanti became an international hit, remixed by 25 top DJs from the US, the UK and the Netherlands.
“I decided to grab the bull by the horns and hosted the I Dance against Crime competition with the SAPS.
“I also became chairman of the Atteridgeville Youth Crime Prevention Desk and chairman of the Creative Industries Forum of Saulsville, Atteridgeville and Lotus.”
He also was made vice-chairman of the Tshwane Youth Crime Prevention Desk.
GP recently finished working on his album Vuleka, to be released early next year, containing tracks like Selo Sela.
“It’s an amazing commercial mix with Bacardi,” said GP.
