UKHOZI FM sport commentator Thulisile Miya has broke boundaries after becoming the first isiZulu woman commentator on SABC TV Sport.

The 33-year-old wants other women to know that women can do jobs believed to be for men only.

Thulisile has been working as sport commentator on Ukhozi for more than eight years, specialising in soccer.

She told SunBuzz she is grateful for being the first isiZulu woman commentator on SABC TV Sport.

She believes women have a lot to do.

“Being an SABC TV Sport commentator made me realise that there is a big gap between men and women in TV sport presenting, especially in vernacular languages. I know there are a lot of women who are more talented than me and who know more about sports than I do but they are not given opportunities to showcase their talent,” she said.

Thulisile hopes becoming the first isiZulu woman commentator on SABC TV Sport will open doors for others.

“I wish women would stop undermining themselves by saying there are jobs for men only because there is no such. They can break boundaries and do those jobs like I did,” she said.

Thulisile said she couldn’t believe sport commentating is actually her career.

“It was not my dream to be a commentator or presenter but when Ukhozi announced that it was looking for a women commentator, I tried my luck to see what would happen and I was lucky to be chosen.

“Growing up,I liked soccer and played it but later quit as I wanted to focus more on my university studies. I obtained a Public Management degree at Mangosuthu University of Technology.”

Thulisile said she wants to grow more in the commentating industry as she is looking up to many women commentators and presenters like Gloria Brown.

“Although there are many women who did the job before me in general,, working in among men makes me proud.

“I wish in other places they realise that women have talent and need opportunities,” she said.
