Veteran actor Sello Maake KaNcube is gearing up to step into a new character as Washington in Mzansi Magic's upcoming telenovela, Champions.

The star tells TRUELOVE more about his character, describing him as one of the most sought-after soccer stars.

"From soccer star and playboy turned formidable visionary and soccer businessman in the 80s, Washington was one of the National Soccer League players. To him soccer is a religion," the actor explains.

"Washington is a typical man's man who cruises through life with the audacity to want what he wants and get exactly that. He's an alpha male, the world and all its subjects are there to play support in his glorious journey in life".

Sello also shares his secret to his longevity in an industry where many have come and fizzled out fast.

"There is a maxim that says: ‘love conquers all’ and that's very true. Khalil Gibran says, Work is love made visible. That I possess love is manifest in my work. But what is really at work for me is the childlike spirit that lives in me. Love combined with that is a knocker.

"Shakespeare captures that succinctly when he says ‘Love is like a child that longs for everything it can come by’. Every artist does exactly that, perpetually yearning to play this or that part and it is not that you know all the time what part you want. Maybe classics and contemporary works, you know, but generally any part that can come ones way," he says.

Being in the limelight for as long as he has comes with harsh criticism but the 63-year-old thespian is adamant that he takes it in his stride.

"I accept criticism with a philosophical calm, every cloud has a silver lining," the actor quips.

His future plans include completing an autobiography, which he says he has started working on and establishing himself as a solo playwright.

"I have co-written three plays. I still have to establish myself as a solo playwright, screenwriter and director. I have started working on my autobiography but I had to put on hold due to the interesting developments in my life. It almost feels premature to publish it now," says the former Skeem Saam star.

He says he wishes more people appreciated theatre.

"One thing I wish to change about showbiz is to awaken the passion and patronisation of theatre in the Black middle class. Theatre in its make up is the elite and the Black middle class is the social strata that is prone to possess a disposable income," he concludes.
