  • Winter isn't a popular season for having a wedding but it is possible.
  • A wedding planner says booking a venue in winter is also more affordable.
  • She advises couples to get a wedding coordinator to lessen the workload for them.

Having a wedding in winter might seem undoable because of the low weather temperatures and quicker sunsets but it surely is possible.

Wedding planner Ade Boshoff says having to plan a wedding during the winter season is not so different from planning a wedding in any other season. The biggest difference between a winter and a summer wedding is that it should start earlier because of the shorter days.

“That’s actually a plus because it means that you get to party longer,” says Ade.

She adds that wedding venues tend to be cheaper in winter and many venues offer discounts from May to August.

An inside venue is most ideal for winter weddings, preferably ones that consist of a fireplace, Ade says, and adds that the most common inside venues in Gauteng are Rosemary Hills Greenhouse Café, Simbali Lodge and GROUND the Venue.

“May has actually gotten to be a very, very popular date with weddings just because it’s not so warm and it’s not that cold like June or July,” Ade says, explaining how there has been a growing trend of weddings in early winter.

However, Ade says the best time for having a wedding is in the end of August. “My professional opinion, the very last week in August is one of the best dates to get married because it’s starting to get warmer [and] your chances of rain are very limited.”

Ade concludes by emphasising that people should know the difference between a wedding coordinator - who is someone responsible for assisting the couple in planning the wedding and overseeing that the plans come to life - and a venue coordinator - who is someone who is usually employed by the booked venue to ensure that the venue is well prepared but their duties are solely related to the venue and not the wedding.

Her advice is that couples invest in a wedding coordinator because that will make the planning process easier and take much of the load off the couple.

“It’s going to make your life so much easier, it’s going to cause a lot less fights between you and your fiancé, you're not going to be so stressed before the wedding, it just makes everything so much easier.”
