What’s considered petty to others might be an actual ick for you.

Many of us look out for relationship deal breakers during the talking stage, which is the decider of whether they are a good contender to go onto the next stage - dating. And, through failed relationships, we learn more about ourselves.

However, if your potential partner isn’t as prim and proper as you thought, it can ick you out.

There are many annoyances one can think of that can initially be a total turn-off. We normally speak about common deal breakers such as infidelity, dishonesty and abuse. But, there are other relatively less serious habits in potential partners that can equally be responsible for a dissolution of a relationship.

Though might be considered trivial, five people tell us their petty deal breakers, ranging from incorrect grammar to bad odour.

If you don’t stand for something, then you might not be it for Martin, 22, as he prefers girls who have hobbies.

My petty deal breaker is someone who doesn't have hobbies, I always feel like there's a disconnect when I'm with someone who doesn't have something to do for fun outside work. I feel like it brings some sort of quality in someone's life and feels like there's more sides to explore when it comes to that person.

No swag! You better get back in line because Andiswa, 24, loves her guys with a sense of style.
I get icked out when the guy can’t speak proper English, or if he can’t dress, hair is ugly/messy or he's not into cologne, as much as some people suffer from allergies the least you can do is try to smell good.

Banter is number one on Lunga’s, 23, list, so channel your inner Trevor Noah but make sure you’re not a Gemini.
Being with someone who can’t get my jokes or sarcastic comments. I can’t be with someone who doesn’t understand certain things I say and those statements 'flying over' their heads. It’s a deal breaker for me but yes, it is petty. As someone who’s into astrology, I can’t be with a Gemini.

Can’t be grilled out and think you stand a chance with Lungile, 28, as she doesn’t go for anyone with a gold tooth.
Well from my queer perspective, a deal breaker in a relationship can be a lot of things. In terms of my own vanity, I wouldn’t date someone who has a gold tooth or speaks broken English. From a general standpoint, I’d say cheating, lack of kindness, selfishness and disrespect are deal breakers. Also, I’m always attracted to women who smell good and look good like all the time.

Sine, 23, is icked out by people who chew with their mouth open and are messy.

My 'petty deal breaker' are those people who can't close their months when they eat or chew. The whole spitting everywhere is just disgusting. Another one is a person who can't clean up after themselves when done eating especially in public spaces it's a big no. Last one is people who don't say thank you and please to people, especially service stuff.
