Adoption: for some it’s a word that signifies hope, especially if they've been dealing with infertility, illness or struggling to conceive. For others, it’s a daunting one – marred with nuanced anecdotes that discourage would-be adoptive parents from pursuing it as an option.

Transracial adoption was legalised in South Africa in 1991. Before this, it was prohibited, so parents were not allowed to adopt a child from a different race group. But this is no longer the case, and many parents now have the chance to adopt children from any cultural group. However, there are challenges that add to the already extensive adoption process that prospective parents have to go through.
