As a powerhouse DJ with a heart of gold to match, Lamiez Holworthy-Morule has become a darling in Mzansi’s eyes.

The 31-year-old media personality, businesswoman and philanthropist is juggling it all. From inspiring initiatives helping underprivileged communities and her picture-perfect family with husband Khulani ‘Khuli Chana’ Morule and their children to keeping fit with kickboxing, she’s been open about it all.

Lamiez is now back on the decks with a number of performances already under her belt, which include travelling from Pretoria to Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.

Fans can also look forward to the February-March 2023 TRUELOVE cover star’s performance at the 10th annual DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival during the weekend of 23 and 24 September 2023.

Getting the opportunity for a quick chat with Lamiez, she tells TRUELOVE all about how excited she is to be taking her talents to the festival.

“So, the fact that I’ll be on the main stage this year is really exciting … For anyone that’s never listened to me, I try to use a lot of nostalgia in my set. So, a lot of old-school music that people can sing along to and it’s just always nice when people are all in unison and everyone’s just happy and singing together.

“So, depending on the time of my set, it will either be old-school house or old-school amapiano but it will definitely be a lot of sing-alongs and just, yeah, making sure that everyone participates and that we’re one in that moment.”

Being back in the hustle and bustle of a packed work schedule can have a toll on a new mom. Her son Leano Zion was born in April 2023 and now that he’s a few months old she takes him on the road with her.

When it comes to how it’s been getting back into work mode, Lamiez says, “So, it’s a tricky one because you know there’s obviously mommy guilt that comes with leaving my son when I do go to work. But in that same breath, what just made me find purpose in me is when I do what I do.

“I’m also really blessed with an amazing support system. So, my husband, my mom, my siblings, my friends - they make this new journey and this new role so much easier. And what I have done, seeing that he is older now and old enough to travel, when I am booked out of town, I travel with him with my mom and my nanny just to avoid being away from him. So, I haven’t spent a night away from him since.”

Lamiez has been open with the physical and emotional post-partum struggles she’s dealt with. In South Africa, perinatal depression effects 21 to 50 percent of women, which can pose health risks to both mom and baby.

Although experiencing these difficulties, Lamiez makes it her mission to find balance in all facets of her life.

“Some days are better than others. It’s just been extremely overwhelming all these different changes happening all at once. But I’m slowly learning to be more patient with myself and just looking at my son, he makes sense. Sometimes he’s the only thing that makes sense. So, I’m just learning to be more patient with myself and realising that, I’m not going to lie, I feel like I put myself under a lot of pressure and rushed back to work,” she reveals.

“But in that same breath it’s because I felt so complacent at home. I felt like I was losing my mind by not working because for the longest time that is all I knew how to do. So, now just finding the balance and learning how to wear all these hats at the same time while still being myself and remembering that I am an individual and I am still me before everything else has been really important.”

Maintaining her individuality and affirming her abilities is something she strives to do in her everyday life, telling herself: “I am enough.”

“That will always be the one thing that comforts me in any and every situation, especially in times where you feel like you’re not enough - you question yourself and you question your existence. So, just always remembering that I’m enough and that I’ve made it this far and that the same God that brought me this far will not leave or forsake me now. That I’m in good hands and that I am protected.”

The famed DJ is no stranger to motherhood, as she has been a mother figure to Khuli Chana’s daughter, Nia from his former relationship with Asanda Maku, as well as her own nephew.

She explains to us the kinds of lessons she hopes to impart on her kids as they grow older.

“I’ve been very blessed to wear the mommy hat even before I got to carry my son. But just taking from my own mom, who is my everything and my biggest inspiration, is just allowing my kids to be themselves with zero pressure and supporting them wholeheartedly in whatever it is that they decide to do while still being firm and – I don’t want to use the word strict but that’s exactly what my mom was for the longest time.

“And now that I’m older I appreciate it because it definitely saved me and saved my siblings from so much. So, it’s definitely just being firm and yeah, my kids must understand what time it is, there’s a time to play, there’s a time to work. Most importantly, just to respect and that respect goes a really long way."
