Zodwa and Bongani are officially hitched!

In what may have been the most anticipated moment for the hit series, Gomora, beloved characters Zodwa (played by Sannah Mchunu) and Bongani (played by Thulani Mtsweni) tie the knot in a beautiful ceremony attended by their loved ones.

Of course, with a show like Gomora, hair-raising drama is to be expected and did they deliver.

However, Mzansi’s favourite pair weren’t about to let a fight between Sizwe (played by Ayanda Daweti) and Zibuko (played by Senzo Radebe) ruin their perfect day.

And so perfect it was that Mzansi Magic’s very own Our Perfect Wedding made an appearance to feature the stunning ceremony – talk about the crossover of the year!

Currently in it’s fourth and final season, Gomora claimed the number one spot of DStv’s most watched show with more than one million viewers - before Shaka iLembe’s grand debut.

While Zodwa and Bongani’s relationship had many ups, downs, trials and tribulations, it’s no secret that much of the cast have been waiting to see the couple take the next step in their relationship.

Speaking to TRUELOVE, dressed as Gladys, Thembi Seete explains just how much the characters have been looking forward to this momentous occasion.

“We’ve been looking forward to it! It was supposed to happen last season already and obviously we had a lot of changes; you know how telenovelas go. Sometimes [the] story changes, sometimes they would rather take a different direction and save it for the next season. So, this day, we’ve been at it since last year – last season already. I’m happy, it feels like a real wedding! She looks amazing…  it’s exactly how we imagined it.”

Fashion designer and former wardrobe standby for Gomora Ayanda Sanqela put the work behind Zodwa’s one-of-a-kind royal blue gown as well as the bridal party’s looks.

She brought to life Gomora’s head of wardrobe Julie Palmer’s vision of a modern-day township wedding that highlights Zodwa’s vivacious character.

“Julie, the HOD (head of department) of wardrobe, did the research. So, she came to me with what she wanted and then, ja, I constructed the garments from scratch … [Zodwa’s gown took] let’s say a week because Julie had to buy fabric and then patterns, cutting and then constructing the garment,” Ayanda explains.

Julie tells us, “When we were given the brief that it was a typical township wedding; but we didn’t want to do a white wedding and we didn’t want to do the typical traditional Zulu wedding because it’s the inner city.

“So, my vision was, I wanted something colourful and decided on this beautiful blue that we’re using, and I got the designer in, Ayanda Sanqela, and then we put our heads together and then I told her my vision. Then she went ahead and made the dress for us. And then I got in two ladies to come and do the Zulu beading just to finish it off.”

Shot on location at the KwaBhekilanga sports grounds in Alexandra, Johannesburg, the outdoor tent ceremony filled the air with celebration as Zodwa made her way down the aisle.
