If you're planning on staying in this weekend and are still trying to figure out which shows you're going to give all your attention to, we have you covered. We've compiled a list of 4 binge-worthy shows that will keep you glued to your screen.

Here are four great shows we recommend for some much-needed screen time this weekend.

Showmax: Africa and I

Othmane Zolati, a 20-year old from Morocco, had never left his home country until about four years ago when he started his journey to Cape Town – on every mode of transportation imaginable, except a plane. Africa and I,a 90-minute documentary about his trip, tells Othmane’s story of how he walked, cycled, hitchhiked, and skateboarded over 30 000 km through 24 countries to make it to Cape Town.

It's a crazy, inspirational adventure that appeals to our universal desire to travel, and will remind you why Africa still, even today, is the desirable and beautiful destination that it is. Othmane’s pocket camera details his exhilarating experience – from getting to know traditional Africa’s Maasai, Hamer, and Himba people; to seeing another side of West Africa while sailing in Benin.

Othmane’s trip also includes his enterprising ways to get money – an especially interesting part of the story, as he did only leave home with just $80, a backpack, and his camera. Watch it on Showmax, and follow Othamane on Instagram.

Netflix: Pray Away

In 2018, Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Russell Crowe starred in the movie, Boy Erased, based on writer and LGBTQI+ activist Garrad Conley’s 2016 memoir on his experience in conversion therapy.

For many, the idea of “pray the gay away” sounds as bizarre and it is invasive, yet it still continues unchecked. Pray Away, a Netflix documentary, features survivors and ex-leaders of “conversion therapy” as they speak out about its harm to the LGBTQ community and its devastating persistence.

It’s harrowing, but necessary viewing, and will hopefully inspire constructive conversations, debates, and participation – especially with the current attention on a new bill in South Africa that seeks to ban conversion therapy in children – a practice still prevalent in our country and across the continent. Watch Pray Away on Netflix, and also, watch Boy Erased, on Netflix as well, if you haven’t seen it yet.

BBC Lifestyle, DStv channel 174: The World’s Most Luxurious S1

Beautiful locations, expensive hobbies, luxurious travel, and people who are always chasing summer and dreamy experiences. Not just rich aunts, but the world’s wealthiest. The World’s Most Luxurious started out as unplanned viewing while channel hopping, however, its first episode on luxury trains features our very own The Blue Train, and from there, it’s gasp-worthy, extravagant minute-after-minute watching into the world’s super-wealthy.

Out of reach for most of us, this show will inspire you to bucket list your international travel plans with once-in-a-lifetime destinations, travel, and experiences. Get that vision board ready and find the first few episodes on DStv’s Catch Up service as well to start your binge.

Showmax: Five Tiger

Written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker, Nomawonga Khumalo, with co-writer and multiple award winner, Brett Michael Innes (Sink, Fiela se Kind) producing alongside Ellen: Die storie van Ellen Pakkies producers, Paulo Areal and Schalk Willem Burger; Five Tiger is the story of a God-fearing woman who finds herself in a transactional relationship with a church leader as she tries to support her sick husband and daughter.

This short film received multiple award nominations on the international film festival circuit, including a nomination for Best Short Film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The film is haunting, telling the uncomfortable realities that many women face even in spaces deemed traditionally and spiritually safe. Five Tiger stars Ayanda Seoka, Fumani Shilubana, Khalalelo Makhanda and Menzi Biyela. Available on Showmax now.
