  • Mpho Sebeng’s memorial service took place with many media personalities sharing their memories about him.
  • Rosemary Zimu says she worked with Mpho a few times and was privileged to meet him.
  • They became close friends and they had planned to win Oscar awards together.

The loved ones of late actor Mpho Sebeng have said their goodbyes.

The actor, who starred in productions such as Savage Beauty and Ring of Lies, was involved in a tragic car accident on Sunday 5 May 2024.

Friends, family and media personalities gathered to celebrate his life at a memorial service held on 9 May 2024.

Fellow actor Kagiso Modupe was the programme director for the evening and actor Gabsile Tshabalala made the opening prayer.

Multiple speakers then took to the stage to share their memories of Mpho and say their goodbyes, with the likes of Thomas Gumede, Rosemary Zimu, and Robot Boi sharing their sentiments.

“I thank God for you, I thank God for your talent, I thank God for the art and the love that we created. I also want to thank God for how consistent you were, how you served him, how you were so kind to everyone you met,” Rosemary Zimu said as she mentioned how she was privileged to work with Mpho on Savage Beauty and Umlaleli

“I thank God for your unforgettable smile, your contagious laugh, the hug that you gave me that felt like home, the endless forehead kisses because you thought I was shorter than you. They made me feel like I was five years old and I love that. I thank God for the way that you protected the humans that you love. I thank God for your fearlessness, I thank Him for your beautiful heart, for your wisdom, and how you were able to bring people together and make every single one of us feel seen,” Rosemary added.

A teary moment for the actress as she recalls how Mpho promised to never leave her and that they had planned to live until their 90 years old, travel the world and win Oscars together.

“I just want to thank bagolo, batswadi for such an amazing, respectful spirit you borrowed us,” Thomas Gumede said as he showed gratitude to Mpho’s parents and guardians for raising him to become an admirable man. Thomas further added that he had known Mpho from an early age and he knew that he would grow to be a “superstar”.

The consensus among the speakers was that Mpho was a talented artist who was dedicated to his craft and always eager to learn and perfect his roles. He is also said to have been a fashionista, a God-fearing man and a lover of good times. Many reaffirmed that being around him was always a good vibe.

Close friend to Mpho, Robot Boi, said, “Just like the life of Christ was short-lived, [Mpho] made an impact in the short space of time which he lived.”

Apart from the media personalities who took to the stage and shared a few words of remembrance, other media personalities were spotted in the auditorium such as actor Aubrey Poo and Thato Dithebe.

Many videos were displayed as well throughout the ceremony, which convey the special moments that Mpho had with friends and family and a trailer of the latest production he starred in.

The evening concluded with words of motivation from pastor Given Mabena and a vote of thanks from Mpho’s aunt Ntswaki Selonyane.

Family and guests then departed the venue as the choir sang their closing hymns.
