Kholwa Brothers will compete against 62 countries at the World Champions of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, California, this month.

Durban-based scathamiya group Kholwa Brothers will fly Mzansi’s flag high at an international competition.

The group will compete against 62 countries at the World Champions of Performing Arts to be held at Los Angeles in California, USA from 22-30 July.

This after the group won on the national level of the South African Championships of Performing Arts held in Rustenburg, North West in December 2020.

Group leader Derrick Mlambo said their group was not just chosen to represent Mzansi overseas, but they worked hard on the national competition and won.

“We were supposed to go and represent South Africa overseas in July and November last year, but it was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will make sure that we deliver our best and leave the audience wanting more because we know that overseas audiences love scathamiya,” Derrick told SunBuzz.

He said that it won’t be their first time going overseas, as they’ve also travelled to the USA in 2018.

“In 2018, we had a tour and performed in many cities of the USA including New York, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Washington DC, New Jersey, and Baltimore.

“I would like to thank the Arts Culture Sport and Recreation under the leadership of MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela and Premier Sihle Zikalala for promoting our music when they were delivering their budget speeches last year,” he said.

He said as much as they had already won on national level and preparing to represent Mzansi on the international stage, they were more happy to hear their name announced and congratulated during the official opening of the KZN legislature.

“I didn’t believe that our name, Kholwa Brothers, was being congratulated in the KZN legislature itself.

“I didn’t know that our victory in Rustenburg would go that far. We’ll make sure that we represent our traditional music well overseas. We will be competing against 62 countries under the category of the group that sing without instruments,” said Derrick.

He said that said they aim to return with six gold awards.
