A CYCLIST in his 30s was bumped into and killed by a speeding car allegedly driven by fleeing hijackers.
The suspects were running away from private security guards after allegedly trying to hijack a truck on the N12 off-ramp in Etwatwa, near Sundra in Mpumalanga, on Monday, 27 June, at about 9.30am.
Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said: “Two Pakistani citizens were travelling on the N12 going in the direction of Witbank after purchasing some goods from Springs.
“They were pulled over by a silver Toyota Corolla with four suspects who attempted to hijack them. Fortunately, private security guards that were patrolling the area noticed the drama that was unfolding.
“On arrival, a shoot-out ensued between the security guards and the suspects. Two suspects were reportedly shot and killed. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered. The other two suspects fled the scene.” with the said vehicle chased by the security guards. They headed towards Katboschfontein Road in Sundra.”
Mohlala said the suspects bumped into a cyclist near Sundra as they were fleeing.
“Unfortunately the cyclist succumbed to his injuries. After crashing, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran on foot. They disappeared in the nearby bushes. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Sundra police,” he said.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the Toyota Corolla was reported stolen in Kempton Park, Gauteng, in February and was fitted with false number plates.
