Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has no hard feelings over missing out on the DStv Premiership coach of the season award and has instead challenged Rulani Mokwena and Gavin Hunt ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Nominated for the award alongside Mokwena and Hunt, the Spaniard enjoyed a great first campaign with the Buccaneers, leading them to second place in the Premiership, which guarantees them a spot in next season's edition of the CAF Champions League.

It was made even greater by their success in the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, as the Soweto giants completed a double of knockout competition trophies that they can proudly display in their cabinet.

The coach of the season award went to Mokwena of Mamelodi Sundowns, who wrapped up the title in April with seven matches to spare. Sundowns finished the season with a 16-point lead over Pirates and a 19-point difference with third-placed SuperSport United.

Riveiro is hoping that he, as well as Mokwena and Hunt, can continue competing against one another at the summit of the Premiership table.

"The individual awards is part of this. It will never change. But if I am nominated it's because my technical team and the whole club is doing a fantastic job. I get the benefit of that and my name is there, but we are group of working people. It's an honour in my first season to see my name there. I really appreciate the people who decided to nominate me and congratulations to the winner, Rulani, and even to Gavin for the fantastic season that they had," Riveiro told media at an event held at Vodacom World in Midrand, where Pirates players and coaching staff were parading their MTN8 and Nedbank Cup trophies.

"Hopefully next season we can continue competing against one another in the right way and offering good performances to show for the people."
