Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning champions of South African football, find themselves on the cusp of making history, according to the sentiments echoed by their legendary midfielder, Ernest Mtawali.
In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Mtawali expressed his confidence in Sundowns' ability to clinch a quadruple this season, a feat unprecedented in South African football. The Tshwane giants have already stamped their authority on the continental stage by clinching the inaugural African Football League (AFL) trophy. Furthermore, their formidable presence extends to both the local arena and the CAF Champions League, where they currently find themselves in the semifinals of that competition and the Nedbank Cup.

Additionally, their dominance in the DStv Premiership sees them leading the league table as they aim to defend their title. Reflecting on Sundowns' current trajectory, Mtawali emphasized that the team possesses the necessary ingredients to achieve this historic success. Despite recent challenges, he remains steadfast in his belief that Sundowns can emerge triumphant in the remaining competitions.
"It's true at the moment you can see the team is struggling because of the way they are getting the results. You know when people are used to you winning with ease and sometimes you have to grind hard to get results it's feels as if all is lost. But I am telling you nothing is lost for Sundowns. We can still go on to win the three remaining trophies and win a quadruple at the end of the season," Mtawali told the Siya crew.
"The main focus could be on the CAF Champions League and the Nedbank Cup as the league is as good as already won. So, for me I still believe Sundowns will make history and win a quadruple this season. Don't judge them looking at the recent results. Look at how they get those results. When many feel they won't win they come out as victorious. That's the spirit that can win them a lot. They have the never say die spirit even when things don't look good on their side," Mtawali observed.
Mtawali highlighted the importance of Sundowns' resilience and winning mentality, particularly in navigating through tough encounters. He emphasized the players' understanding of each other and their unwavering hunger for success as key factors driving their relentless pursuit of trophies.
"There is a great understanding amongst the players. They win when you feel like it's difficult to win. Everyone at the club has that winning mentality and hunger. That's what will push them to go all out and win almost all the remaining trophies and win the quadruple. They have shown that they can stand for each other and bail the team out. That's the spirit of a winning team," Mtawali concluded.
As Mamelodi Sundowns continue their quest for dominance on multiple fronts, the belief in their ability to rewrite the annals of South African football history remains unwavering.
