In the dynamic landscape of South African football, recent developments have shed light on the challenges faced by clubs both on and off the pitch. The repercussions of financial mismanagement and non-compliance with regulations have come to the forefront, as several top-flight clubs find themselves grappling with FIFA-imposed transfer bans.

Amidst these challenges, legendary midfielder Hlompho Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns offers insights into the need for accountability and adherence to regulations to safeguard the integrity of the game in the country.

In a conversation with the Soccer Zone show, Kekana underscored the importance of learning from these incidents, emphasizing the evolving landscape of football governance in the modern era. He emphasized the empowerment of players and the role of technology in ensuring transparency and accountability within the sport.

“We should learn as a country from such incidents because it’s no longer the old days where we just have to do as we please. Now there’s technology, players are vocal, they know how to speak,” Kekana told Soccer Zone.

“So, it’s going to be very difficult for a lot of teams if they will try to cut corners and make sure they don’t pay players because players now are vocal, they have their rights and know their rights so they make sure.

“So, they need to make sure that those who still think that the players will be quiet and you play those dodgy games you need to get your books in order,” Kekana said.

As the spotlight intensifies on clubs facing sanctions, recent developments have seen some clubs, including Polokwane City and Chippa United, successfully overturn their transfer bans after fulfilling their financial obligations to former players. These instances serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of non-compliance and the imperative for clubs to uphold their responsibilities towards players and stakeholders.

As South African football navigates through these challenges, the words of Kekana resonate strongly, urging stakeholders to prioritise transparency, accountability, and adherence to regulations. Only through collective effort and commitment to best practices can the sport thrive and flourish in the face of these challlenges.
