Former Kaizer Chiefs and Zimbabwean international attacker, Khama Billiat, remains clubless after parting ways with the Naturena-based club at the end of last season. The last we heard from Chiefs on their relationship with the player was that Amakhosi had tabled an offer but were ‘blue-ticked’ by the former Mamelodi Sundowns speedy player, who went under the radar without a trace since then.
News doing the rounds, as first broken by our Siyagobhoza crew last Thursday, is that the Zimbabwean sensation is due to undergo a trial – yes, you heard right, Khama Billiat will be undergoing a trial – at Cape Town City this week. At the time of going to print, the Citizens had not said anything on the proposed move, while the duration of his trial stint remains unknown. What is clear is that coach Eric Tinkler will be using the FIFA break to run the rule over the 33-year-old, who is not getting any younger. Not many would have predicted this being the situation after Billiat parted with Chiefs.
In fact, just a mere mention of his name is enough to send shivers down a defender’s spine. Who would have thought that Billiat would remain clubless five months into the season, losing so much football activity? This is no ordinary footballer, but if we are being honest with ourselves, we can’t really claim to not have seen it coming. It is reported that Chiefs wanted to impose a salary cut in their new offer to their former talisman and that is what broke the camel’s back in their dealings. He rejected the new offer, but truth be told, Chiefs were within their rights to cut his salary, which is said to have been one of the team’s conditions to extend their relationship with the Zimbabwean.
