Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named his preliminary squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next month, making some interesting calls.

Bafana, who have been drawn into Group E with Tunisia, Mali and Namibia, will not have a lot of time to prepare for the competition, with the final Premiership matches set to be played on December 30 and 31. Broos is expected to name the final squad before the end of the year.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has been included in the preliminary squad, having recently made his first appearances of the campaign, while Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has been included, despite struggling with injury recently. Bvuma has made two appearances for Amakhosi this season, against Moroka Swallows and Polokwane City, and have kept a clean sheet in both matches.

Goodman Mosele has made a return after being out of Broos' teams for some time, as well as TS Galaxy captain Mlungisi Mbunjana. Orlando Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi also has a shot at being part of the final squad, as he is part of the preliminary side.

Upfront, Broos has made some interesting inclusions with Tshepang Moremi from AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United's Elias Mokwana. Iqraam Rayners, who will play in the Carling Knockout final this weekend with Stellenbosch FC, is also part of the preliminary squad and will be hoping to impress Broos in these final few days of 2023 to make it into the final team.

Burnley's Lyle Foster has been included in the squad, despite struggling with mental health recently, though his manager Vincent Kompany hinted that the South African should be ready to return soon.
