Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained the omission of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart from his final 23-man squad.

The 26-year-old was initially included in Broos’ preliminary 30-man squad, however he was among seven players that did not make the cut for the final selection.

There was optimism that Maart’s resurgence in form, which was underlined by his brilliant Soweto Derby goal would be enough to warrant him a place in Broos’ squad.

However, speaking to the media at the SABC studios, the Belgium mentor referred to Maart’s form leading up to the derby as unsatisfactory, not doing enough to earn himself a place in the national team.

“Do you think it’s enough when you score a brilliant goal?” Broos asked journalists.

“Everyone was saying Maart is not playing good with Chiefs, I’m not saying it, I read it in the paper. So, he was not playing good and then suddenly he scores a fantastic goal and then you say he scored a fantastic goal, he’s on a good level – why? Because he scored a goal? When you select like that, every time you will have 25 new players because there is always one who is playing well at that moment. It doesn’t work like that.

“Maart is someone we look at every week like we do with the 40 other players and if he gets to the same level at Sekhukhune, what he didn’t do now with Chiefs. It’s up to him,” he explained.
