The 38-year-old was included in Roberto Martinez's first A Selecao squad, captaining his country in fairly comfortable victories over Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.

Ronaldo netted two braces in A Selecao's 2024 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, putting the disappointment of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar behind him.

Speaking after Portugal's 6-0 thrashing of Luxembourg on Sunday night, Martinez explained the importance of the ex-Manchester United forward's experience in the team.

"Cristiano is a unique player in the world, with the highest number of international caps," he said, according to France24

"The experience he has for the dressing room is very important.

"All players have an important role. The younger ones due to their willingness to play, and players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Patricio and Bernardo Silva bring experience.

"It's important to have a complete dressing room."

Ronaldo has now scored 122 goals in 198 matches since his senior debut for Portugal.
