Goalkeeper Dorde Petrovi, Beniot Badiashile and Enzo Fernandez were recalled by Blues coach Mauricio Pochettino, while South African striker Lyle Foster made his return to the Burnley line-up.

The home side looked lively in the early stages, with Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher going close in the opening 20 minutes, but Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric did well to keep out the strikes.

After a lively opening, the home side thought they had broken the deadlock on 20 minutes when defender  Axel Disasi got on the end of Mykhailo Mudryk's cross to head home from close range but the goal was ruled out for a handball.

Chelsea continued to push but had to wait until the 40th minute to get the breakthrough as Cole Palmer converted a penalty after Mudryk was brought down by Lorenz Assignon, who was sent off for the challenge.

Despite being a man down, Burnely equalised two minutes after the break as Josh Brownhill did well to cushion the ball for Josh Cullen, who rifled the ball past Petrovic.

The Blues nearly fell behind just before the hour mark but goalkeeper Petrovic produced a superb save to keep out Foster's thumping header.

However, Pochettino's charges did restore their lead in the 77th minute as Raheem Sterling's delightful flick played in Palmer who took one touch before drilling the ball into bottom corner.

Burnley hit back four minutes later as defender Dara O'Shea lost his marker to head home a corner from Cullen, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.
