Netherlands and Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has fired a dig at Manchester United while advising teammate Cody Gakpo about his next potential move.

The PSV Eindhoven was heavily linked with a move the Red Devils, with the player revealing he thought he was going to end up at Old Trafford.

A number of reports claimed that United opted to sign Brazil international Antony from Ajax Amsterdam as there wouldn't be enough funds to sign both players.

World Cup Star Responds To Links With Chelsea

The Dutch forward has starred at the World Cup so far, scoring three goals in four games but Van Dijk does not feel United are on the same level as Real Madrid, who have also been linked with his teammate.

“Are Manchester United and Real Madrid on the same level? No disrespect, not at all," Van Dijk said, as per the Mirror.

“I definitely think he has that next step in him.

"I definitely feel like it could happen, whether that is in the winter or the summer or next year, time will tell. He is a great boy who works hard, very talented and definitely there is more in him.

"We are so pleased he is doing so well for us. Long may it continue.”

Gakpo has been one of the standout performers in Europe this season, having registered 13 goals and 17 assists across all competitions for PSV.
