With both Bayern Munich and Liverpool believed to be the main contenders to land Xabi Alonso's signature at the end of the season, the Spaniard has reportedly indicated his preferred destination.

Both six-time European champions have officially confirmed that they will be parting ways with their current managers once the ongoing campaign concludes.

Following a string of poor results recently, Die Roten announced that they and Thomas Tuchel had decided that the German tactician will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the 2023/24 season.

In the case of the Anfield club, Jurgen Klopp confirmed in January that he has decided to step down as Liverpool manager after his eight-and-half-year spell at the helm.

The Stuttgart native has won everything available in club football since taking charge of the Reds, but according to The Telegraph, Alonso is not eager to succeed a cult figure of Klopp's nature, with the Bavarians now believed to be his likeliest next landing spot.

The same report claims that preliminary talks have already been held with the 42-year-old's representatives, and that the record Bundesliga champions believe they have the advantage in signing their former midfielder should he leave Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso is currently enjoying a historic season at the BayArena, with the German outfit, under his tutelage, being unbeaten in all competitions and in contention to win their first-ever Bundesliga, a second UEFA Europa League as well as the DFB-Pokal titles.

While the reigning German champions may now be in pole position to land the Tolosa native's services, there is also a possibility that he stays on at Leverkusen to play in the UEFA Champions League, but as things stand, Bayern pose a big threat to that eventuality.
