A lot of Setubal native's previous time in the English top flight was spent in London coaching Chelsea, then Tottenham Hotspur, but sandwiched in between those two jobs was a stint at Manchester United.

According to Manchester Evening News, the Portuguese tactician wants to return to the Old Trafford hotseat, and would even go as far as "to walk" to the city in order to fulfil this desire.

The Red Devils' managerial situation is becoming increasingly unclear as pressure continues to mount on current boss Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman saw his charges suffer the club's 13th loss of the league season on Monday night, away at Crystal Palace.

This is the most defeats the Mancunians have suffered in a campaign in the Premier League era, and it is believed that new club minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not definitively behind the 54-year-old.

Even with the club in the FA Cup final, the rest of their season can perhaps be deemed as an underachievement with the record losses in the Premier League, a group-stage exit from the UEFA Champions League, and a fourth-round elimination in the Carabao Cup. All these factors have combined to concoct an uncertain future around Ten Hag.

The same report claims, however, that while the club has compiled a shortlist of managers who could potentially replace the former Ajax Amsterdam manager in their dugout, Mourinho is not one of them.

The Portuguese tactician and United's new chief Ratcliffe are believed to be close friends, but his reappointment, at this stage, looks unlikely.
