While the prevailing story line that emerged from the BayArena on Sunday evening was Leverkusen's first-ever German top-flight title, there was also a less joyful one that came from the opposition.
The 2023/24 Bundesliga winners beat Werder Bremen 5-0 to clinch the championship, but the River Islanders were without the services of their midfielder Naby Keita.
According to the club's managing director Clemens Fritz, the reason for this was because the player refused to get on to the team bus once he found out he was not named in Ole Werner's starting XI.
"After Naby found out yesterday that he wouldn't be playing from the start, he decided not to get on the bus but to go home. We will talk to him and his advisor tomorrow about the consequences and how to proceed," the German executive said, as per Goal.
Werner was clearly not happy at the situation, telling DAZN: "It annoys me and it will have consequences. I haven't spoken to him yet, but that will follow in the next few days."
However, the 54-time Guinea international has since taken to Instagram to refute the accusations, stating: "I wish to clarify my situation at my club Werder Bremen.
"Ever since I arrived at this magnificent club, I have always shown my professionalism. I have always tried to help the club and the great supporters, especially during this time of poor results.
