Speaking in a press conference after Italy's dramatic loss to South Africa, a result that saw her side dumped out of the competition, Milena Bertolini expressed her surprise at the events that had unfolded in their final Group G match.
The Azzurre finished the first round of the tournament with just one victory, a 1-0 win over Argentina, with Banyana's frontline ultimately proving too much to handle for the Italian defence in Wellington.
According to Italy-based publication Corriere dello Sport, the Italian Football Federation is now looking at potential replacements for Bertolini.
Several candidates are reported to have been discussed by the organisation, including Juventus women coach Joe Montemurro and Roma women manager Alessandro Spugna.
Bertolini claimed her future "doesn't matter" in the wake of their departure from the World Cup, and that she hoped she has left a legacy following her appointment in 2017.
