Unconvincing performances against Cape Verde and Egypt were compounded by a late capitulation in their final group match against Mozambique, which ultimately saw them end their campaign with only two points to their name.
While their two-point margin gave them a slender hope of knockout-stage qualification as one of the four best third-placed teams, Cameroon's victory over Gambia all but confirmed the west Africans' exit from the tournament as the four-time champions were eliminated from back-to-back AFCONs at the group stage for the first time ever.
Hughton and the entirety of his technical team have now paid the price for Ghana's poor showing, with the Ghana Football Association having released an official statement confirming this.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect," the statement read.
“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
