Mauritania 1-0 Algeria

Algeria have been knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Mauritania on Tuesday night.

Algeria gave themselves hope for the clash after netting a late goal to rescue a point against Burkina Faso over the weekend, while Mauritania were already eliminated on Saturday.

The 2019 champions have failed to register a win in their last five matches in the tournament, which stretches back to the last tournament when they were eliminated in the group stages.

Mauritania would go on to take the lead  in the 37th minute courtesy of a strike from captain Mohamed Yaly, who opened his account for the tournament.

The two-time African champions would have no response in the second half and  succumbed to a defeat, which leaves the side bottom of the group.

Mauritania, meanwhile, secured their first-ever win at AFCON and also qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-place finishers.

Angola 2-0 Burkina Faso

Angola secured top spot in Group D after defeating Burkina Faso 2-0 at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro.

The Angolans came into the clash top of the group after the weekend's win over Mauritania, while Burkina Faso drew with Algeria despite leading on two occasions.

Burkina Faso recalled Bertrand Traore and Ismahila Ouedraogo after their impact off the bench against the Algerians.

However, it the Angolans who got the opening goal after 37 minutes as Christopher Mabululu found the back of the net after being set up by Fredy.

Palancas Negras did make the result in second-half stoppage time, with firing past goalkeeper Herve Koffi to seal their top spot in the group.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will also be in round of 16 as Algeria were unable to beat Mauritania.
