When footballers are wearing their headphones or AirPods on matchdays, do you ever wonder what they're listening to?

Liverpool's imposing defender Virgil van Dijk gave fans a glimpse into his music taste in an interview done with SuperSport TV.

The 31-year-old revealed that he listens to some Afrobeats on matchday, with some hip-hop to go with it. He does point out that his taste varies, as he's also friends with electronic dance music producer/dj, Martin Garrix.

The eclectic baller mentioned that he listened to plenty of Afrobeats during the rehab of his horrific knee injury in 2021:

"For me it’s not like I have to build up. I’ve got a lot of afro-beats in there, I’ve got a lot of rap in there. I’ve got a lot of Dutch music on there too. My choice at the moment for when I’m in the gym is definitely afro-beats.

"It keeps me happy and makes me energetic. Sometimes I throw some rap in there which can help me feel like I’m stronger than ever. That’s good sometimes for strength work and things like that. I did a lot of rehab away in the sun and that helps as well. Afro-beats can bring you some sunshine when you’re listening to it but when you’re already in the sun it makes things even better.

In an interview with GQ, Virg spoke about his Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson's poor taste in music, admitting that he tells the left-back every day about his lack of rhythm.
