Let's take a closer look...

Siyabonga Zulu on his ex-girlfriend's impact on his career

Former Sundowns left-back Siyabonga Zulu got candid about his career troubles on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube on Metro FM.

Zulu is in the process of reviving his football career with Motsepe Foundation Championship side La Masia, after being without a club for four years.

The 30-year-old was released by Mamelodi Sundowns in 2019 after missing his disciplinary hearing and going AWOL. In Zulu's interview with Ncube, he claims that a toxic relationship with an ex-girlfriend negatively impacted his place at Masandawana.

"She used to harass me. She would even go as far as finding a place that's close to mine," stated Zulu when asked about how his ex influenced his time at Downs under Pitso Mosimane.

"The coach started to look at me differently. He didn't like what was going on, maybe after every three or four days, cops were being sent to me.

"This affected me because I wasn't focused on my football, because any moment, I thought anything could happened. So going to training wasn't fun anymore."

In 2019, the camera crew of Moja Love reality TV show "No Excuse Pay Papgeld" headed to Chloorkop, looking for Zulu to answer for his child maintenance issues with the mother of his child.

The camera crew was met with Sundowns officials, who told them that Zulu had been released from the club. Zulu's ex, now a popular traditional healer Gogo Maweni (Lee Ann Makopo), was the one who took the reality TV crew to Chloorkop to confront him about his alleged failure to pay child support for their child.

Gogo Maweni alleged that her relationship with Zulu started heading south after she fell pregnant in 2017. She also claimed that the player would cheat on her and crashed her Audi car at the time.

Zulu says his troubles with Gogo Maweni started during his time at Platinum Stars:

"In Rustenburg, I was arrested three times. She would come to me in Rustenburg from Johannesburg, she once claimed I raped her, she would also claim that I hit her, she had lots of stories.

"What would annoy me is that the same time I would go in [get arrested], I would be released. When attending court, problems would arise, then she wouldn't make it, resulting in the case being dropped," revealed Zulu.
