Missing remains left people of Moshawane Village outside Mahikeng in great shock.
Two graves belonging to one family were found open with the remains missing on Thursday, 28 April.
Family member John Modisakeng said the remains from the graves were stolen. John said he was called by farmers who were passing by their family gravesite. “I was informed that two graves were dug out.”
“We saw human bones on the other grave. “I am still shocked to see how much people disrespect the dead,” he said.
“One grave is of my great-grandchild whom we buried few months ago and the one is of an old relative who was buried years ago. “John said this is a second incident to happen in this village.
“It pains us that people who do this are never arrested. He said they hoped the police will do a better job this time and find the culprit.
Mmathapelo Modisakeng (25) who buried her three months child in January said she was devastated.
She told Daily Sun she was struggling to come to terms with what happened.
“I am still grieving the lose of my third born; now the remains are missing. How can people be this cruel,” said Mmathapelo.
Mmathapelo said she was curious as to what the culprit wanted to do with the remains.
“I am praying the people behind this are found with the remains so that my child can rest peaceful.”
North West Police Spokesman Captain Sam Tselenyane said they were investigating a case of violation of a grave following an incident wherein two graves were damaged.
Tselenyane said the police were called to the cemetery after members of the community became aware of the incident.
“Police found two graves of which the soil was dug out of one of them. What appeared to be human bones were also found next to the grave. The other grave looked sunk and it was leveled with the ground. A case of violation of a grave was registered,” Tselenyane said.
No arrest has been made as yet and investigation into the matter continues.
