TWO security guards accused of stealing medicine in hospitals have been released on R3 000 bail.
Khethiwe Moloi (49) and Dumisani Mahlasela (61), who are guards responsible for guarding various clinics around Gert Sibande District, Mpumalanga were released on bail by the Evander Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 18 May.
According to police spokeswoman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, they were arrested by the Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit together with the Secunda K9 unit on Tuesday, 17 May for contravening the Medicines and Related Substances Act.
“Information was received about a security guard who were selling medication. A search warrant was obtained and a disruptive operation was conducted whereby the house of the suspect was visited and on arrival they were given permission to search the premises.
“During the search, different types of medications and surgical gloves found were confiscated and she was arrested,” she said.
Sekgotodi further said investigations led the team to her colleague Mahlasela’s residential premises in Emalahleni.
“The team proceeded to his house. During the search, different medications which required prescriptions were found and confiscated, he was also arrested,” Sekgotodi said.
The case was postponed to 14 July for further investigation.
