Atletico Madrid progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after defeating  Inter Milan penalties in the last 16 second-leg at Metropolitano Stadium.

Atletico were boosted by the return of Antoine Griezmann, who joined Alvaro Morata up top and as a result, Memphis Depay dropped to the bench.

Inter, meanwhile, brought back regulars who were rested in a narrow in over Bologna, the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Benjamin Pavard, Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij and Federico Dimarco.

There was a flurry of chances from both ends in the early exchanges but Inter drew first blood just after the half-hour mark after Dimarco found the net from close-range and doubled the lead for the visitors on aggregate.

The Spanish giants had an almost immediate response after Griezmann equalised and pulled a goal back on aggregate also with a close-range effort after a looped pass by Koke.

Diego Simeone's men went to the break trailing Inter on aggregate and after a host of chances in the second stanza, with ten minutes to go, Atletico eventually brought on Depay in place of Morata.

Depay made an instant impact, as he put the hosts ahead in the dying minutes and levelled up the tie on aggregate with a low drive into the bottom corner and the sides went to extra-time after a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

There were a lot chances created still in extra-time but the sides could not be separated.

Atletico won the penalty shoot-out 3-2 after goalkeeper Jan Oblak made two saves and Martinez missed the last spot-kick for Inter.

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 PSV Eindhoven

Borussia Dortmund booked their spot in the quarter-finals after beating PSV Eindhoven 2-0 in the round of 16 second-leg and 3-1 on aggregate at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund had their regular attack of Donyell Malen, Julian Brandt, Jadon Sancho and target-man Niclas Fullkrug.

PSV looked up to Luuk de Jong, Mailk Tillman and Johan Bakayoko in the front line.

The German outfit had a dream start after Sancho gave them the lead within the first three minutes and also gave them a 2-1 lead on aggregate with a low drive that went in off the post.

BVB kept on coming and had good chances but PSV were kept in the Gale by the brilliance of goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

The game continued to open up early in the second stanza as Hirving Lozano was denied the equaliser for PSV by the woodwork.

Fullkrug had a goal for BVB 13 minutes before time disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a marginal offside.

Marco Reus eventually settled the contest as he got the second goal for Dortmund in stoppage time and made it 3-1 on aggregate with an easy tap-in after going clear on goal.
