One of Cristiano Ronaldo's family members has caused quite the stir following Lionel Messi's latest Ballon d'Or triumph.

The Portuguese superstar's sister, Katia Aveiro, is in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after she seemingly took a jab at Messi on social media after he secured his eighth Golden Ball on Monday night.

Perhaps infuriated by the absence of her brother from the list of nominees, she hinted at feeling that the Argentine was not deserving of what is arguably considered to be the most prestigious individual award in world football this year.

Messi clinched the accolade a record-extending eighth time, more than any player in history, after winning the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint Germain – accumulating 16 goals and 16 assists in 32 games in the process – and famously winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with the Albiceleste, for which he was named the player of the tournament too.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, is closest behind him with five Ballons d'Or, and earlier this week, the Portugal captain was the subject of much social media discussion after he commented with laughing emojis on a post suggesting Messi should have won only five Ballons d'Or instead of the eight he has.

Now, according to GOAL, his sister Katia has commented on an Instagram post depicting the former Real Madrid talisman with a wide range of his individual awards, including his five Golden Balls, writing "earned, not given" and including five applause emojis.

His seemingly aggrieved sister is, however, not the only person who perhaps holds Ronaldo in higher regard than the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.

France manager Didier Deschamps, who lost to Messi's Argentina side in the aforementioned World Cup final, said that he does not feel the Inter Miami superstar is better than the Portuguese icon or French striker Kylian Mbappe. who is yet to win the Ballon d'Or.
