One of Cristiano Ronaldo's former Manchester United teammates believes manager Erik ten Hag is right to have benched the 37-year-old over the past few weeks.

Ronaldo's form has taken a noticeable dip, with the striker having scored just one goal in eight outings for United so far in this campaign, although many of those appearances came as a second-half substitute.

With the former Real Madrid superstar having unsuccessfully sought a departure from Old Trafford in the latest transfer window, an exit could be on the cards in January, with Ten Hag reportedly willing to let him leave if a suitable offer presents itself.

After Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire Manchester derby last Sunday, some criticised the Dutch tactician's decision to not use the forward, although the coach has since explained that he kept the forward on the sidelines "out of respect" for his glittering career.

The 52-year-old also recently revealed that the Portugal international is "pissed when he is not playing", creating further speculation the player might leave at the turn of the year given his current fringe role in the squad.

Ex-United defender Patrice Evra has now weighed in on the rumours of a potential exit from the Theatre of Dreams for Ronaldo, insisting the Red Devils manager is correct in his treatment of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"I've read reports saying United will let Ronaldo leave in January," the Frenchman told Betfair.

"It's a circus again. We're back to what we've done all those years I don't understand it.

"We are not inside the club, so maybe the manager and Cristiano talked before the season and Ten Hag said he needs to be fit and will get a chance.

"I know a player like Cristiano Ronaldo won't accept that. To be fit, you need time and to play.

"Ten Hag gave Ronaldo his chance to play in the first two games and we lost, so he changed the team and they won four games in a row.

"Actually, what Ten Hag is doing is the right thing.”
