After it was reported earlier this week that Lionel Messi has had talks with American club Inter Miami, the Paris Saint-Germain forward has now been urged to turn down a move to "David Beckham's circus".

The Athletic recently claimed that the Major League Soccer side has made an approach for Messi, whose contract at the Parc des Princes is set to come to an end in June 2023.

The 35-year-old attacker – who has had a strong to the season with 26 goal contributions in just 18 matches – remains highly sought-after, with his current employers keen to extend his stay in France, while his boyhood club FC Barcelona are also eager to take him back to the Camp Nou after letting him go in August 2021.

With the MLS outfit said to be feeling confident about signing the Argentine after talks between the two parties, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has now insisted that if Messi joins the US club, it would be a serious downgrade.

"He's 35 years of age – two-years younger than [Cristiano] Ronaldo," Jordan told talkSPORT.

"He's a genius of a footballer and like everything, everything runs its course so I'd be disappointed to see him land at Planet Hollywood, in Beckham's circus.

"This is arguably the world's greatest player at a stage of his career where he should be able to perform in the elite leagues.

"So going to America – I don't know what that says."

The Albiceleste skipper is understood to only be willing to make a decision on his future after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be the last of his career.

Barca remain hopeful in their quest to re-sign him, with reports suggesting that manager Xavi Hernandez has already told Messi his plans for him in Catalonia next season.
