Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez is reportedly facing a 15-game ban for elbowing an assistant referee at the FIFA World Cup on Friday evening.

The South American side failed to progress beyond the group stages despite defeating Ghana 2-0 in their final Group F game.

The Uruguayans were unhappy with the referees after the game as there was a challenge on Edinson Cavani late in the game that was waved by away the officials, while there was Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check either.

Gimenez was furious with the officials after the game and reports claim the defender appeared to elbow an official, who were on their way down the tunnel after the game.

The Atletico Madrid defender also had to be restrained by his teammates as he chased referee Daniel Siebert.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have reported that if incident gets reported by FIFA competitions director, Gimenez could receive a 15-game ban.

The drama with Gimenez did not stop there, as the defender expressed his displeasure about the referees to a camera and used a few explicit words.

"They [the referees] are all a bunch of thieves these sons of b***hes," Gimenez told the camera, as per the Sun.

"Yes, record me. Son of a b***h."

Gimenez's teammate Edinson Cavani could also find himself in hot water after he was seen pushing the VAR monitor to ground after the game.
