A statement on the club's official website read: "FC Barcelona and Girona FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Oriol Romeu.

"The player will sign a contract with the Club for the next three seasons, until 30 June 2026, and his buyout clause is set at 400 million euros (R8 billlion)."

Romeu, who previously represented the club at youth level between 2004 and 2011 before making two senior appearances, is considered to be a replacement for the vacant role left by former club captain Busquets after he joined Lionel Messi at Inter Miami recently.

The defensive midfielder, who also played for Chelsea and Southampton before returning to Spain with Girona, completed a medical on Monday and will now join up with his new teammates on their pre-season tour of the United States.
