A former Premier League star has admitted that he made a mistake in deciding to move to the Saudi Pro League.

Last year, Jordan Henderson moved to join Steven Gerrard's Al Ettifaq in a deal that was believed to have seen him earn £350 000 (R8.3 million) per week.

The ex-Liverpool captain's stay at the side was, however, not a very long one after he decided to leave in January with a switch to Ajax Amsterdam.

The 33-year-old made 17 appearances for Ettifaq, picking up four assists before his departure. Speaking to Dutch outlet Parool, the England international admitted that football in the Kingdom did not suit him.

"I now realise that football runs through my blood. The Saudi league is developing but it doesn’t suit me, I made a mistake going there. I am happy here at the Ajax project," he said.

While addressing the media during his unveiling as an Ajax player, Henderson admitted that he learned a lot of things from his time in Saudi and added he has no regrets.

"I haven't got a bad word to say about anyone. I have friends over there I'll speak to forever and there were still positives to come out of it," he had previously said per the Daily Mail.

"In the end it didn't turn out way we both wanted to, but it ended on great terms."

Since joining de Godenzonen, the Englishman has made five appearances and has picked up one assist.

He was in action as they suffered 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16 tie on Thursday night, a result that knocked them out of European competition for this season.

The Eredivisie giants are currently fifth on the table, six points behind fourth-placed AZ Alkmaar after enduring a torrid start to the 2023/24 campaign that saw them pick up just five points from the first seven game.
